The gracious folks over at Canadian Geographic magazine recently let make my first foray into the written side of editorial. In the past I’ve stuck only to photography as words don’t often flow easily from my brain. One thing I learned is that with the help of no less than three editors a very crude piece can be polished enough to make me look literate and like I have just a little bit of wit. It’s a fun and kitschy piece that pits Sasquatch tourism and Ogopogo tourism against each other. Make note that if you’re visiting the Alberta Rocky Mountains near Banff you should get a hold of Sylvanic Bigfoot and become a believer in the hairy man of the woods. Check the article for details. Enjoy.

One great thing about working for the mineral and resource industry is that helicopters are plentiful and getting up in the air is never a problem.

For this instalment of POTEOD I am returning to an image taken during my visit to the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre (KTTC) in Peterborough last month. This image graphically illustrates some of the perilous injuries that a Southern Ontario turtle can expect as a result of human encroachment on their habitat. In the case seen here, it is was a situation of car vs turtle. Thankfully due to the care of the skilled employees at the KTTC this little guy gets a second chance (albeit with a rather unique hinged shell). Full gallery and text can be found online with Canadian Geographic magazine here. I encourage you to take a look to see what this fantastic group of people are doing to lend a hand to one of Canada’s neglected animal populations.

For the past couple of days I’ve been photographing and interviewing everything turtle at the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre in Peterborough, Ontario. At the centre, passionate veterinarians and volunteers are committed to the rehabilitation and conservation of Ontario’s dwindling turtle populations due to human caused injuries, habitat destruction, overfishing (yes people fish turtles), and poaching. Most of Southern Ontario’s turtle populations are designated as species at risk and the numbers continue to fall every year. Take a look at their website at www.kawarthaturtle.org and take a minute to see the great work they do.

This year Ottawa had the prestigious opportunity to host the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, but with ticket prices that ranged from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, most of us did not have the luxury of seeing the game in person at the Senators’ Scotiabank Place. Fortunately the NHL and various sponsors put on a great weekend of All-Star themed events at the Ottawa Convention Centre where hockey fans could do everything from meet members of the 2012 NHL All-Star team, to test their shot accuracy in the NHL Skills Zone. I covered the three hockey filled days on behalf of Canadian Geographic magazine, and had a great time with the thousands of fans that made their way to the downtown location. Click HERE for the gallery.
